Bulbous tip correction in Korea
Bulbous tip correction slims a round, wide nose tip by trimming and stitching the tip cartilages together, removing some fat under thick tip skin, or both. It suits a tip that looks blunt or spread. Expect about 1 to 2 hours under sedation, the partner clinic’s figure for its standard rhinoplasty, and 7 to 10 days in Seoul.
Who is a good candidate for bulbous tip correction?
- Your nose tip looks round, wide or blunt from the front
- The tip cartilages are large or spread apart, the first of the two causes the clinic describes
- The tip has a lot of fat and soft tissue under the skin, the second cause
- You would also like the tip a little higher, which your own cartilage can add
When it may not be the right choice
- Your tip skin is very thick. Cartilage work alone may change the shape less than you hope, so ask what else the surgeon would do
- What bothers you is the width of the nostril wings rather than the tip. Alar reduction treats that
- You have had surgery on the tip before. Revision rhinoplasty is planned differently
Which method fits you?
The clinic picks the method by the cause of the round tip, which it checks at consultation, and many tips need more than one step. Surgeons call this kind of surgery tip plasty.
| Method | What happens | Suits | Downtime |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trimming and stitching the cartilage | The ends of wide tip cartilages are trimmed to a suitable width, then stitched toward each other to narrow the tip. | Large, wide tip cartilages | Splint and stitches out at day 7 to 10 |
| Drawing spread cartilage together | Cartilages that sit apart are tied together with stitches, which also lifts the tip. Your own cartilage can be added for more height. | Tip cartilages that spread apart, or a tip that also needs height | Splint and stitches out at day 7 to 10, plus a donor site if cartilage is added |
| Thinning the soft tissue | Some of the fat and soft tissue under the tip skin is removed, so the skin can shrink down over the cartilage. | Thick tip skin with a lot of soft tissue | Often combined with cartilage work; tip swelling fades slowly in thick skin |
What happens on the day of bulbous tip correction?
- Consultation. The surgeon looks at your tip from the front, the side and below and pinches the tip skin to judge its thickness. For its nose surgery the clinic says it uses a 3D CT scan, which shows the outside and the inside of the nose.
- Anesthesia. The clinic lists the same figures for bulbous tip work as for its standard rhinoplasty: sedation, about 1 to 2 hours and a same-day return to your hotel. Ask how those apply to your tip.
- The tip cartilage is reached through a cut across the skin between the nostrils or inside the nostrils, then trimmed, stitched or supported, and soft tissue is thinned if planned.
- A splint goes on to protect the new shape of the tip before you leave the clinic.
What is recovery like after bulbous tip correction?
- Days 1 to 3
- Swelling, firmness and tenderness center on the tip, and the nose is blocked. Some bruising can appear. Sleep with your head raised.
- Days 7 to 10
- The splint and stitches come off. The tip looks puffier than it will end up and feels numb.
- Weeks 2 to 3
- Most bruising has gone and you can be out in public comfortably, though the tip is still full.
- Months 1 to 3
- Swelling eases from the bridge first, while the tip stays slightly full and firm.
- Months 6 to 12
- The tip keeps refining as the last swelling goes, slowest in thick skin.
How long should you stay in Seoul after bulbous tip correction?
Plan 7 to 10 days in Seoul. For nose surgery our general guidance puts splint and stitch removal at about a week, but tip work without an implant may leave the stitches in for up to 10 days, so the flight home usually falls between day 8 and day 10. If cartilage for the tip is taken from your ear, that is a second small wound to check. The tip still looks rounder than planned when you leave, because of swelling, so judge the shape months later. As after any operation, if you become breathless or have chest pain, get emergency care first, then tell the clinic. Do the same for heavy bleeding from the nose that does not stop.
What are the risks of bulbous tip correction?
- A tip that stays wider or rounder than you hoped, more likely with thick skin
- A pinched, narrow or uneven tip if too much cartilage is removed or the stitches pull unevenly
- Tip swelling that lasts many months, with a stiff or numb tip
- Poor healing of the tip skin, a particular concern when the soft tissue under it is thinned
- A small scar across the skin between the nostrils when that cut is used
- Nosebleeds, a blocked nose and infection
- Soreness and a small scar on the ear when ear cartilage is used
- A tip you would want reshaped again, which means another operation
What affects the cost of bulbous tip correction in Korea?
How much tip work you need drives a bulbous tip correction quote, along with whether soft tissue is thinned, whether your own cartilage is added and from where, and whether the bridge or nostrils change in the same operation. This page gives no figure yet, because the plan is only clear once the clinic sees your tip. A patient coordinator answers first, then the surgeon at the partner clinic that fits your case reviews your photos and consults in depth. Make sure your written quote lists the surgeon, any cartilage graft and the visits after surgery. Our consultation is free for you, and you pay only the clinic’s own price for treatment.
More questions
Can a bulbous nose be fixed without an implant?
Often, yes. Bulbous tip correction works on the tip cartilage and the soft tissue under the skin, so the tip itself does not need an implant, though the result depends on your skin and tip structure. An implant comes in only if you also want a higher bridge.
Does thick skin limit bulbous tip correction?
It can. Reviews of Asian rhinoplasty describe thick tip skin with plenty of soft tissue as common, and reshaping the cartilage alone may not show through it as much. Surgeons may also thin the soft tissue, and in some cases remove a little skin; which of these suits your skin is decided at the examination.
How long does the tip stay swollen after bulbous tip correction?
The tip is the last part of the nose to settle. Most bruising fades within 2 to 3 weeks, but the tip can stay full and firm for months and keeps refining for up to a year, most slowly in thick skin.
Is a bulbous tip the same as wide nostrils?
No. A bulbous tip is about the cartilage and soft tissue at the end of the nose, while wide nostrils come from the nostril wings at its base. Some noses have both, and alar reduction can be added to the same operation.
