Alar reduction in Korea

Alar reduction narrows wide or flared nostril wings by removing a small piece of the nostril wing or drawing the base in with a stitch. It suits nostrils that look large from the front. At our partner clinic it is done under sedation, with stitches out after about a week, so plan about 7 days in Seoul.

Who is a good candidate for alar reduction?

  • Your nostril wings look large or full from the front, and you want a nostril reduction
  • You have wide nostrils because the lower part of the nostril wings flares outward
  • You are having rhinoplasty and want the base of the nose to match a slimmer tip
  • You can accept a fine scar at the base of the nostril

When it may not be the right choice

  • Your nose looks wide because of the bridge or the bones rather than the nostrils. Alar reduction does not narrow the bridge
  • The tip itself is round and wide. Bulbous tip correction treats that
  • You already find it hard to breathe through your nose. Narrowing the nostrils can reduce airflow further
  • You tend to form raised or thick scars. Depending on where the cut goes, a scar can sit at the base of the nostril, so ask how visible it may be

Which method fits you?

The clinic chooses between two methods by the shape of your nostril wings, aiming to avoid an uneven result rather than only reducing size. Surgeons call the operation alar base reduction, and it is often added to rhinoplasty.

Methods for alar reduction compared: what happens, who each suits and downtime
MethodWhat happensSuitsDowntime
Removing part of the nostril wingA small piece of the nostril wing is cut out and the edges are stitched. The clinic describes the cut as mainly on the inner side of the nostril wing.Nostril wings that look large because they are wide, even if they are not fleshyFine stitches out after about a week; a scar line that often fades over months but can stay visible
Drawing the base in with a stitchA stitch ties the lower parts of the nostril wings toward each other, so the base of the nose narrows.A nose that is wide mainly at the lower part of the nostril wingsNo tissue is removed; ask whether your plan combines it with removal

What happens on the day of alar reduction?

  1. Consultation. The surgeon compares the width of your nostril wings with the rest of your face and checks both sides for differences, then marks how much to change on each side.
  2. You are sedated for the operation. When alar reduction is part of a rhinoplasty, it is done in the same operation.
  3. The planned piece of the nostril wing is removed, or a stitch draws the base in, and fine stitches close the skin. The clinic lists about 1 to 2 hours, which matches its standard rhinoplasty figure; ask how long alar reduction takes on its own.
  4. No overnight stay is needed. You go back to your hotel and keep the stitch line clean as the clinic shows you.

What is recovery like after alar reduction?

Days 1 to 3
The nostril base is swollen and tender, and the stitch line may ooze. Clean it as the clinic advises, and call the clinic if the oozing increases.
Around day 7
The stitches come out. The scar line is pink and the nostrils can still look a little uneven while swollen.
Weeks 2 to 6
Swelling settles and the nostril shape evens out. Avoid pulling or squeezing the nostrils.
Months 3 to 12
The scar usually keeps fading and softening, though in some people it stays visible or thickens. Judge its final look once it has matured.

How long should you stay in Seoul after alar reduction?

If you have alar reduction on its own, plan about 7 days in Seoul: the clinic lists stitch removal after about a week, and that visit should come before your flight. Done with rhinoplasty, it follows the rhinoplasty timing of 7 to 10 days, with the flight around day 8. As after any operation, if you become breathless or have chest pain, get emergency care first, then tell the clinic. Respond the same way to heavy bleeding from the nose or the stitch line.

What are the risks of alar reduction?

  • A visible scar at the base of the nostril, which can thicken or widen
  • Uneven nostrils, often from removing slightly different amounts on each side
  • A notch in the nostril rim or floor, or a softened natural crease beside the nostril
  • Nostrils narrowed too much, which can look unnatural and make breathing harder
  • Too little change, which may need a second procedure
  • Bleeding, infection and the risks of sedation

What affects the cost of alar reduction in Korea?

No alar reduction price is given here yet, because the clinic prices it only after seeing photos of your nose. The figure depends on whether it is done alone or within a rhinoplasty, on the method (removing tissue, a stitch, or both) and on the anesthesia. A patient coordinator answers first, then the surgeon at the partner clinic that fits your case reviews your photos and consults in depth. Make sure the written quote names the surgeon and includes stitch removal before your flight. Our consultation is free for you, and you pay only the clinic’s own price for treatment.

More questions

Does alar reduction leave a visible scar?

There is a scar wherever skin is cut. It sits at the base of the nostril, along the natural crease or just inside the nostril, and often fades over months, though in some people it thickens. The surgeon can show you at the consultation where your cut will go.

Can alar reduction be done without rhinoplasty?

Yes. The clinic offers it as a procedure of its own, with stitches out after about a week. It is also often added to a rhinoplasty, so that the nostrils match a narrower tip.

What is the difference between alar reduction and nostril shape correction?

Alar reduction makes wide nostril wings narrower. Nostril shape correction brings down a nostril rim that arches upward, so less of the nostril shows from the front even when the tip is not turned up. Some noses need both.

Can alar reduction affect breathing?

It can if too much is taken, because the nostril openings become smaller. Say at the consultation if you already breathe poorly through your nose, so the surgeon can plan a smaller change or treat the inside of the nose too.
