Functional rhinoplasty in Korea
Functional rhinoplasty improves breathing by straightening a bent septum, shrinking swollen turbinates or supporting a narrow nasal valve, often reshaping the outside at the same time. It suits a blocked nose with a structural cause. Urban Plastic Surgery, our partner clinic, lists 1 to 2 hours under sedation for standard rhinoplasty; most stay 7 to 10 days in Seoul.
Who is a good candidate for functional rhinoplasty?
- One or both sides of your nose stay blocked most of the time, and medicines or sprays have not helped enough
- A bent septum (septal deviation) has been found, which the clinic notes can cause blockage, rhinitis and sinus problems
- The turbinates inside your nose are swollen and block the airway (hypertrophic rhinitis)
- The nasal valve, a narrow space high inside the nose, is tight or closes when you breathe in
- You also want to change the shape of your nose and would rather have one operation for both
When it may not be the right choice
- Your nose blocks mainly with allergies or colds, without a structural cause. Medical treatment usually comes first
- You breathe well and want only a change in shape. Rhinoplasty without airway work is planned differently
- You have had nose surgery before. Scarring and less usable cartilage change the airway plan, so revision rhinoplasty is planned separately
Which method fits you?
Functional rhinoplasty is a set of operations inside the nose, chosen by what is narrowing the airway. Many people need more than one, and the outside shape can be changed at the same time. The clinic plans this from a 3D CT scan of the inside of the nose.
| Method | What happens | Suits | Downtime |
|---|---|---|---|
| Septoplasty | The bent part of the septum is trimmed or moved back into line through a cut inside the nose, leaving enough cartilage to support the bridge. | A deviated septum that blocks one or both sides | Congestion and crusting inside the nose for a few weeks |
| Turbinate reduction | Swollen turbinates on the side walls of the nose are made smaller, keeping as much of their lining as possible so the nose can still warm and moisten the air. | Swollen turbinates that narrow the airway | Crusting and some discharge while the lining heals |
| Nasal valve support | Strips of cartilage called spreader grafts are placed along the upper bridge to widen the narrow valve area. | A valve that is tight or closes when you breathe in | Soreness where the cartilage was taken, plus congestion while the area heals |
What happens on the day of functional rhinoplasty?
- Consultation. The surgeon asks when your nose blocks and what you have tried, examines the inside of the nose, and the clinic takes a 3D CT scan.
- Planning. The breathing work and any change to the outside shape are planned together, so one does not undo the other.
- Surgery. Most of the work is done through cuts inside the nose. The clinic gives its standard rhinoplasty figures for this operation: sedation, about 1 to 2 hours and no overnight stay. Ask whether your plan changes that.
- Soft splints or packing may sit inside the nose, with an outer splint if the shape was changed. The clinic checks how you feel before you go back to your hotel.
What is recovery like after functional rhinoplasty?
- Days 1 to 3
- The nose feels fully blocked and you breathe through your mouth. Some blood-stained discharge is common. Sleep with your head raised.
- Days 7 to 10
- Stitches and any outer splint are removed. Inner splints come out when the surgeon judges the lining ready.
- Weeks 2 to 6
- Crusts and congestion clear gradually and breathing starts to improve as the lining heals. Do not blow your nose hard.
- Months 3 to 12
- Breathing settles, and if the outside shape was changed, it keeps refining as the swelling goes down.
How long should you stay in Seoul after functional rhinoplasty?
Stay 7 to 10 days in Seoul. Our general rhinoplasty guidance has splints and stitches coming out at a check around day 7, and cartilage grafts can mean stitches stay in until day 10, so most flights leave between day 8 and day 10. The inside of the nose may still feel blocked on the plane after septal or turbinate work; ask the clinic how to keep it moist. Rising pain with both sides blocked, or a fever, should be reported to the clinic promptly. As after any operation, if you become breathless or have chest pain, get emergency care first, then tell the clinic. Heavy bleeding from the nose, which septal or turbinate work can cause, needs the same response.
What are the risks of functional rhinoplasty?
- Bleeding, the most common complication in a large study of septoplasty. A blood collection inside the septum is rare but has to be drained
- A hole in the septum (perforation), which can cause crusting
- A sunken bridge (saddle nose) if the septum loses too much support
- Infection
- Numbness of the upper lip or front teeth, which can last for some time
- Dryness and crusting after turbinate work. Taking away too much lining can leave the nose feeling blocked even though it is open
- Breathing that improves less than hoped, or a change in your sense of smell
What affects the cost of functional rhinoplasty in Korea?
Functional rhinoplasty costs are set per plan, and none are listed on this site yet. The quote moves with which parts are treated (septum, turbinates, nasal valve), whether cartilage grafts are needed and where they come from, and whether the outside shape changes too. A patient coordinator answers first, then the surgeon at the partner clinic that fits your case reviews your photos and consults in depth. Check the written quote for the surgeon’s name and each part of the airway being treated, with splints and aftercare visits included. Our consultation is free for you, and you pay only the clinic’s own price for treatment.
More questions
What is the difference between septoplasty and functional rhinoplasty?
Septoplasty straightens the septum, the wall inside the nose, and is one part of functional rhinoplasty. Functional rhinoplasty can also reduce the turbinates or support the nasal valve, and can change the outside shape in the same operation.
Can I change the shape of my nose during functional rhinoplasty?
Yes. The clinic plans the breathing work and the shape together. Tell the surgeon about both goals at the start, because cartilage taken from the septum may also be needed to support the new shape.
How long will my nose feel blocked after functional rhinoplasty?
For the first week it is usually very blocked. It clears gradually over the following weeks as the lining heals, and recovery from septal surgery usually takes a few weeks in all. Breathing can keep improving for some months.
Will functional rhinoplasty cure my rhinitis?
It treats the structure that narrows the airway, such as a bent septum or swollen turbinates. If allergies or inflammation also play a part, you may still need medical treatment afterwards, so ask the surgeon what surgery can and cannot change.
