Areola reduction in Korea
Areola reduction makes a large or stretched areola smaller by removing a ring of its skin and closing it around the nipple or at the outer edge. It suits areolas that look large for the breast or differ in size. The clinic lists up to 1 hour under sedation with no overnight stay; plan about 7 days in Seoul.
Who is a good candidate for areola reduction?
- Your areolas look large compared with the size of your breasts
- One areola is larger than the other, or their shapes differ
- Your areolas stretched after pregnancy, breastfeeding or a change in weight
- You are having a breast lift or augmentation and want the areola size addressed at the same time
When it may not be the right choice
- Your concern is the nipple itself, wide, long or inverted. Nipple correction treats that
- Your breasts sag as well. A breast lift can also reduce the areola as part of the lift
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding, since the areolas are still changing
- You expect no visible scar. The scar sits at the edge of the areola or around the nipple and fades over time, but it does not vanish
Which method fits you?
The clinic chooses between two designs depending on how wide the areola is. Both remove a ring of pigmented skin; they differ in where the ring is taken and where the scar ends up.
| Method | What happens | Suits | Downtime |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inner ring, next to the nipple | A ring of areola skin next to the nipple is removed, and the areola is closed around the nipple base. | Areolas that are large but not very wide, according to the clinic | Stitches out at day 5 to 7; daily life in 1 to 2 weeks |
| Outer ring, at the edge | A ring at the outer edge of the areola is removed, and the smaller areola is sewn to the surrounding breast skin. | Areolas that are very wide, according to the clinic | Stitches out at day 5 to 7; daily life in 1 to 2 weeks |
| As part of a breast lift | A breast lift can resize the areola as it raises the breast, so a separate reduction may not be needed. | Large areolas on breasts that also sag | A larger operation; see the breast lift page |
What happens on the day of areola reduction?
- Consultation. The surgeon looks at the size and shape of both areolas compared with your breasts and agrees the new size and which design to use.
- The ring of skin to remove is marked, then you are sedated. The clinic lists up to 1 hour.
- The marked skin is removed and the areola is closed with fine stitches, then dressed.
- You return to your hotel the same day in a soft support bra.
What is recovery like after areola reduction?
- Days 1 to 3
- The areolas are sore and a little swollen. Keep the dressings dry and clean as the clinic shows you.
- Days 5 to 7
- Stitches come out at the clinic. If the surgeon is happy with the wounds, you can fly after this visit.
- Weeks 1 to 2
- Daily routines are usually back by now. Avoid rubbing, strong pressure or tight underwire on the areolas.
- Months 1 to 6
- The scar is pink at first and fades slowly. The areola can stretch again as it settles, and by how much varies.
How long should you stay in Seoul after areola reduction?
Unlike most breast operations, areola reduction lets you have the stitches out before you fly, at day 5 to 7. Plan about 7 days in Seoul and book the flight after that visit. Of the 2 to 3 visits on the clinic’s plan, ask which ones you need before leaving and what to do with the dressings on the plane. Tell the clinic promptly about spreading redness, fever, discharge or an areola that turns dark. If you become breathless or have chest pain, get emergency care first, then tell the clinic.
What are the risks of areola reduction?
- A scar around the nipple or at the areola edge, which can widen, thicken or change color
- The areola can stretch again over time, or end up oval rather than round
- Uneven areolas, or a shape you are not happy with, which may need a revision
- Changes in nipple or areola sensation, which may be temporary or lasting
- An effect on breastfeeding in a future pregnancy, since ducts run under the areola
- Bleeding, infection or slow wound healing, and the risks of sedation
What affects the cost of areola reduction in Korea?
An areola reduction quote depends on whether one or both sides are done, the design, the sedation and whether it is combined with a lift or implants. Prices are not on this page yet; photos of your breasts let the clinic prepare a quote. Make sure the written version names the surgeon and covers one side or both, the follow-up visits, dressings and stitch removal.
More questions
Is the areola reduction scar visible?
It sits either around the nipple base or along the outer edge of the areola, where a color change already exists. It starts pink and lightens over the following months, but it does not disappear and it can widen. Ask the surgeon where your scar will be.
Will areola reduction affect breastfeeding?
It can. Milk ducts run beneath the areola. The clinic says it avoids damaging the milk glands, but no operation on the areola can rule out an effect. If you may breastfeed in the future, tell the surgeon before planning.
Can areola reduction be combined with a breast lift or implants?
Yes. A breast lift can reduce the areola as part of the operation, and a reduction can be added to an augmentation. Combining them changes the time in surgery and the recovery, so ask the clinic for the plan.
When can I fly after areola reduction?
Once the stitches are out at day 5 to 7 and the clinic has checked the wounds. Carry spare dressings, wear a soft bra, and ask the surgeon whether anything about the flight needs care.
