Tummy tuck in Korea

A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) removes loose, stretched belly skin and draws separated stomach muscles together. It suits sagging after pregnancy or rapid weight loss. At Urban Plastic Surgery, our partner clinic, it takes about 4 hours under general anesthesia and stitches come out at 10 to 14 days, so plan about 2 weeks in Seoul.

Questions about your own plan? A patient coordinator replies first, free of charge, then connects you with the partner clinic.

Who is a good candidate for a tummy tuck?

  • The skin of your belly has lost its firmness and sags badly
  • Pregnancy and childbirth have left stretch marks, loose skin and weakened stomach muscles
  • Your skin has not tightened again after losing weight quickly
  • Your belly still looks uneven despite steady exercise and diet
  • You have finished having children and your weight has been steady for some months

When it may not be the right choice

  • You mainly want to lose weight. A tummy tuck reshapes the belly and is not a weight-loss operation
  • Your skin is firm and the problem is fat you can pinch. Abdominal liposuction may be enough
  • You have had a blood clot or have a condition that affects healing, unless your surgeon has planned for it
  • You cannot avoid alcohol and smoking for at least a month after surgery. The clinic asks for this because both can slow healing and lead to infection
  • You need to be back at work or exercising within a couple of weeks

Which method fits you?

Urban Plastic Surgery, our partner clinic, chooses between four methods by how much the belly sags and where. The mini, medium and full methods follow the same steps: loose skin is cut away, the separated stomach muscles are drawn together, and the skin is pulled down and stitched. Liposuction can be added in the same operation where fat also needs to come out. The surgeon picks the method after examining you.

Which tummy tuck method fits how your belly sags?

  • Urban Plastic Surgery drawing of a mini abdominoplasty in four panels: a small oval of lower belly skin marked for removal, the separated muscles below the belly button, the muscles stitched together and the flatter belly after.

    Mini abdominoplasty

    What happens

Loose skin is cut away from the lower belly, the separated muscles below the belly button are drawn together, and the skin is pulled down and stitched.

Suits Slight sagging only in the lower belly

  • Urban Plastic Surgery drawing of a medium abdominoplasty in four panels: a wider crescent of lower belly skin marked for removal, the separated muscles below the belly button, the muscles stitched together and the flatter belly after.

    Medium abdominoplasty

    What happens

The same three steps as the mini method, with more skin removed from the lower belly.

Suits Marked sagging in the lower belly

  • Urban Plastic Surgery drawing of a full abdominoplasty in four panels: a wide band of skin marked from above the belly button, the muscles separated along their whole length, the muscles stitched from top to bottom and the flatter belly after.

    Full abdominoplasty

    What happens

Sagging skin is removed starting from above the belly button, the separated muscles on both sides are drawn together, and the skin is pulled down and stitched.

Suits Separated muscles and sagging across the whole belly

  • Urban Plastic Surgery drawing of an upper abdominoplasty in two panels: the cut lines marked along the creases under the breasts, and the smoother upper belly after.

    Upper abdominoplasty

    What happens

A cut is made along the crease under the breasts, and the skin is pulled up and stitched.

Suits Sagging only in the upper belly

What happens on the day of a tummy tuck?

  1. Ahead of surgery, let the clinic know which medicines you are on and whether you have had operations before, or have high blood pressure, asthma, an allergy or a bad reaction to a drug in the past. You may be asked to pause a medicine first.
  2. Because the operation is done under general anesthesia, have nothing to eat or drink from midnight the night before. Remove all metal, jewelry and piercings, take off nail polish on your hands and feet, shower, and wear loose clothes that are easy to take off.
  3. The operation takes about 4 hours under general anesthesia. The surgeon removes the loose skin, draws the muscles together if your method includes it, and stitches the skin closed.
  4. Your surgeon decides whether you stay overnight and whether thin drains are placed under the skin to carry away fluid, so ask about both at the consultation.

What is recovery like after a tummy tuck?

Day of surgery
You will probably be in some pain when you wake up, and the belly feels tight and swollen. The surgeon decides when you can leave the clinic.
Days 10 to 14
The clinic removes the stitches between day 10 and day 14, as one of 4 to 5 follow-up visits. Stay off alcohol and cigarettes for at least the first month.
Weeks 4 to 6
The NHS advises about 4 to 6 weeks off work and exercise, says full recovery takes about 6 weeks, and notes that you should not drive for a few weeks.
Months 2 to 12
Numbness of the belly is common and, according to the NHS, can last from a few months to years. The scar slowly settles over this time.

How long should you stay in Seoul after a tummy tuck?

Plan about 2 weeks in Seoul. The clinic takes the stitches out 10 to 14 days after surgery, and the flight comes after that visit and a wound check. Confirm hospital nights and drains before you book your flight, and ask which of the 4 to 5 follow-up visits fall before you fly and how later checks are handled. If one side swells quickly and becomes more painful, especially soon after surgery, contact the clinic straight away; if you cannot reach the clinic, get emergency care. Blood clots are one of the main risks after a tummy tuck and a long flight adds to that risk, so ask the surgeon about clot prevention for the journey, walk the aisle and drink water. If you become breathless, have chest pain, or one leg becomes painful and swollen, get emergency care first, then tell the clinic, and do not fly until a doctor says it is safe.

What are the risks of a tummy tuck?

  • Fluid collecting under the skin (seroma), one of the most common complications, which may need draining
  • Deep vein thrombosis, which can lead to a clot in the lungs; in one large study of outpatient cosmetic surgery, more than half of these clots followed an abdominoplasty
  • Bleeding under the skin (hematoma), infection and the risks of general anesthesia
  • Problems with wound healing, including the wound opening along the line of stitches
  • Numbness of the belly that can last from a few months to years
  • A long scar across the lower belly, or along the breast crease with the upper method. A full abdominoplasty also leaves a scar around the belly button, and scars can be thick and noticeable
  • If liposuction is added, its own risks apply as well

What affects the cost of a tummy tuck in Korea?

A tummy tuck quote depends on the method (mini, medium, full or upper), whether liposuction is added, the anesthesia, any hospital nights, drains and support garments, and the follow-up visits. No price appears here. A patient coordinator answers first, then the surgeon at the partner clinic that fits your case reviews your photos and consults in depth. The written plan should state the method, who operates, whether hospital nights and drains are included and the day the stitches come out. Our consultation is free for you, and you pay only the clinic’s own price for treatment.

More questions

Which tummy tuck method do I need?

It depends on where the belly sags and how much. At the partner clinic, a mini tummy tuck is for slight sagging low on the belly, a medium one for marked sagging there, a full one when the muscles have separated across the whole belly, and the upper method for sagging above the belly button only. The surgeon decides after examining you.

How long should I stay in Korea after a tummy tuck?

About 2 weeks. The stitches come out 10 to 14 days after surgery, and the flight should wait until that visit and a wound check are done.

Will I stay in hospital or have drains after a tummy tuck?

That is part of your own plan. The surgeon decides whether you stay overnight and whether drains are used, based on the method and how much skin is removed. Ask at the consultation, because both affect your first days in Seoul.

Do I need a tummy tuck or liposuction?

It depends on your skin and muscles. If your skin hangs or the muscles have separated after pregnancy, liposuction alone will not correct it. Liposuction takes out fat and relies on the skin tightening back over the area afterwards, while a tummy tuck cuts away loose skin and can draw separated muscles together.

Should I wait to have a tummy tuck until I have finished having children?

Often, yes. A surgeon writing for the American Society of Plastic Surgeons advises finishing having children first, because another pregnancy may mean more surgery later. Ask your surgeon how your plans affect the timing.
