Breast surgery after pregnancy in Korea

Breast surgery after pregnancy aims to improve volume, firmness or shape changed by pregnancy and breastfeeding, with an implant, a lift, both, or a reduction. It suits women who have stopped breastfeeding and whose breasts have settled. Surgery takes place under general anesthesia or sedation, and you should allow 7 to 10 days in Seoul.

Who is a good candidate for breast surgery after pregnancy?

  • Your breasts grew during pregnancy, then shrank and lost firmness, so they now sag
  • Your breasts stayed larger after childbirth and the extra weight has made them droop
  • Breastfeeding left your breasts smaller and emptier, especially at the top
  • You have finished breastfeeding, and your weight and breast size have stayed steady for some months

When it may not be the right choice

  • You are pregnant or still breastfeeding. The clinic operates once breastfeeding has ended and your periods have returned
  • You plan another pregnancy soon. Pregnancy and breastfeeding can change the breasts again, and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons advises waiting until they have stopped changing
  • Your weight is still changing after the birth
  • You hope surgery will return your breasts exactly to how they were before pregnancy. It can improve shape and volume, but it leaves scars and the result differs from person to person

Which method fits you?

Pregnancy changes breasts in different ways, so the operation follows what changed: volume, position, size or all three. Tell the surgeon how much volume you lost after breastfeeding. Where the nipple sits against the fold under the breast helps the surgeon choose between an implant, a lift or both.

Methods for breast surgery after pregnancy compared: what happens, who each suits and downtime
MethodWhat happensSuitsDowntime
Implant augmentationAn implant replaces the volume lost after breastfeeding. It can make slight sagging less obvious, but it does not lift the breast.Breasts that emptied out, with the nipple still near the foldLight activity after 3 to 4 days
Breast liftAfter pregnancy the skin has often stretched, so the lift removes loose skin and repositions the reshaped breast higher, keeping roughly the same size.Breasts that dropped but kept a size you are happy withLight activity after 3 to 4 days; check-up before flying
Lift with an implantA lift raises the breast and an implant refills the upper part, in one operation or in two stages.Breasts that both sagged and lost volumeMore healing at once. Ask whether the surgeon would stage it
Lift with a reductionBreast tissue and skin are removed as the breast is lifted, making it smaller and higher.Breasts that stayed large and heavy after childbirthThe largest of the four. Confirm the time and stay first

What happens on the day of breast surgery after pregnancy?

  1. Consultation. Tell the surgeon when you stopped breastfeeding, whether your periods have returned, and whether you may want more children, since all three shape the plan and its timing.
  2. The surgeon checks where your nipples sit against the fold, your skin and the volume you have lost, then suggests an implant, a lift, both, or a reduction.
  3. You are put under general anesthesia or sedation. The clinic lists no drain for this operation; ask how long yours will take, especially if a lift is combined with an implant or a reduction.
  4. You usually return to your hotel the same day in a support bra. Ask whether a combined operation changes this.

What is recovery like after breast surgery after pregnancy?

Days 1 to 3
Expect soreness, swelling and tightness. Keep the support bra on and do not lift anything heavy, including your child.
Days 3 to 4
Light daily activities are usually possible, with help at home for anything heavy.
Days 7 to 8
Check-up at the clinic for the incisions and nipples, usually before you fly.
Week 2
The clinic’s schedule puts stitch removal at about 2 weeks, usually after the flight home, so settle who takes them out before you book.
From month 3
Swelling settles, implants drop and soften, and scars slowly fade. Ask the surgeon when you can lift and carry a child freely again.

How long should you stay in Seoul after breast surgery after pregnancy?

With young children, arranging care may be the hardest part, because lifting and carrying are off limits for the first weeks. Decide early whether they travel with you and who helps in Seoul and at home. Allow 7 to 10 days in Seoul, more for a combined operation; the flight usually follows the surgeon’s day 7 or 8 review of the incisions and nipples. Check which follow-up visits, of the 3 to 4 the clinic plans, fall in Seoul, and who removes the stitches at about 2 weeks. If you become breathless, have chest pain, or one leg becomes painful and swollen, get emergency care first, then tell the clinic, and do not fly until a doctor says it is safe.

What are the risks of breast surgery after pregnancy?

  • Scars: around the areola after a lift, and longer ones when more skin is removed. They fade but do not disappear
  • Changes in nipple or breast sensation, and possible effects on breastfeeding in a future pregnancy, especially when the nipple is moved
  • Reduced blood flow to the nipple after a lift, which can damage it. Combining a lift and an implant in one operation can make this more likely
  • Implant risks, including capsular contracture, rupture and further surgery later, since implants are not lifetime devices
  • Uneven breasts, or sagging that returns, especially after another pregnancy or a change in weight
  • Bleeding, fluid collection, infection or slow wound healing
  • A clot in a deep leg vein that can reach the lungs; long flights in the first days raise the chance. Anesthesia has its own risks too

What affects the cost of breast surgery after pregnancy in Korea?

After pregnancy the quote depends mostly on which combination you need: an implant, a lift, both, or a lift with a reduction, and on the anesthesia. There is no price on this page yet, and the clinic quotes once it has seen photos of your breasts. Ask for a written quote that prices each part separately and names the surgeon and any implant model, with the bra, check-ups and stitch removal.

More questions

How long after pregnancy can I have breast surgery?

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons suggests waiting at least about six months after the birth, and longer if you breastfeed, until you have recovered, your weight is steady and your breasts have stopped changing. The clinic operates once breastfeeding is over and your periods have returned.

Can I breastfeed after breast surgery?

It depends on the operation. Any breast surgery can affect milk supply or nipple sensation, and operations that move the nipple, such as a lift or a reduction, carry more risk. If you might breastfeed again, tell the surgeon, because it can change the plan or the timing.

Should I wait until I have finished having children?

If more children are likely soon, waiting makes sense. Another pregnancy can stretch and empty the breasts again and undo part of a lift. Ask the surgeon what a later pregnancy could change for your plan.

Is breast surgery after pregnancy the same as a mommy makeover?

Not quite. A mommy makeover usually combines breast surgery with tummy work such as a tummy tuck or liposuction. This page covers the breast part only. Combining several operations makes the surgery and the recovery longer, so ask whether to do them together or apart.
